News Kate ThomesHead, Bevier Engineering Library
University Library SystemThe ULS provides Pitt students, faculty, and staff access to more than 4.6 million volumes and more than 45,000 periodical subscriptions. The ULS collection of electronic resources is growing rapidly and now includes thousands of databases, and more than 25,000 electronic journal titles and 170,000 electronic books. From this vast array of resources, engineering library personnel and programs help students select resources that are focused on engineering. Thomes and her team help students learn about the different types of information used by engineers and introduce to them the research tools that promote effective and efficient discovery of material that is relevant and appropriate for academic work. Bevier Engineering LibrarySpecialized engineering library Web pages direct students to databases that specifically focus on engineering, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Collaborations between Thomes and faculty leaders of School of Engineering programs, including the Freshman Engineering Program, integrate library research skills training into the engineering coursework. Students pursuing an engineering degree have the opportunity to develop library research skills that will be relevant to them on the job or as they continue advanced degrees in higher education. The Bevier Engineering Library is physically located in the School of Engineering and virtually present via the ULS Web site and in several engineering course Web pages. Thomes and her team are available in the library and online to help students take advantage of the extensive and varied information sources that are available to engineering students. About Kate ThomesKate Thomes has been head of the Bevier Engineering Library since 1994. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and an MA in library and information studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. |
