Welcome to the Freshman Engineering Seminar Website

ENGR 0081 & ENGR 0181

What is the Purpose of Freshman Engineering Seminar?

Freshman Seminar is designed with the needs of first-year Engineering students in mind. The main objectives are to:
  • Help ease the transition from high school to college by helping you discover new information, plan for future goals, and act upon those plans to achieve success in your first year and beyond.
  • Educate you about the different fields of Engineering study and help you select your major if you're not sure which field is right for you.

How is Freshman Engineering Seminar Structured?

There are two components of Freshman Engineering Seminar:

  • Large Group Meetings
All first-year Engineering students attend the large group meetings together. These meetings are designed to help you gain a better understanding of the various fields of Engineering. No matter what major you choose (and if you don't know yet, that's okay!) you will likely someday work with engineers of various disciplines, so having a good understanding of each field is vitally important. The large group meetings will also provide resources to help you with certain ENGR 0011 (or ENGR 0711) assignments.
  • Small Group Recitation Meetings
The small group Peer Advisor-led recitation sections are comprised of approximately 15 students per section, and are grouped according to an interest that the students in the class share. They are led by upperclass Engineering students called Peer Advisors. The recitation sections will help connect you to others in the freshman class with interests similar to yours, and also put you in touch with a successful upperclass student who has completed the Freshman Engineering Program. The recitation section will focus on acquainting you with local and campus resources, provide you with tips and tools for academic success, and will run parallel with your ENGR 0011 (or ENGR 0711) class in the Fall.

No matter what you're going through, there are people out there that have gone through the same thing. People are willing to help, you just have to be willing to let them.-Greg Wunderley

Is there a UHC version of Seminar?

ENGR 0181 - Honors Freshman Engineering Seminar

The Fessenden Honors in Engineering Program (FHEP) provides a vehicle for like-minded, academically ambitious engineering students to meet as freshman engineering seminar groups.

FHEP is about scope-it's about discussing issues beyond the technical and scientific. Participants regularly read about and discuss philosophical and ethical issues of engineering, as put forth by such provocative authors as C.P. Snow and Sam Florman. It is about examining how the sciences and humanities interact-and how they don't. FHEPsters revel in reading thought-provoking works and challenging each other's opinions.

Just like any program offered by the Honors College, FHEP is for students who have the initiative to read deeply and discuss passionately to reap the satisfaction, personal growth, and intellectual benefits that come with doing more work than is required.
